One walk, two counties: Conewago Recreation Trail

This morning I did a loop of the Park City parking lot…not sure if it’s accurate but the pedometer said about 0.7 miles.  I guess I expected it to be more.

This afternoon I returned to the Conewago Recreation Trail for a second time.  (I was not documenting this stuff the first time.)  I wanted to check out the upper part, so I headed for the intersection with Bellaire Road, but could not find place to park.  I then went to another parking location shown on the map, at Prospect Road, and managed to find a place to park on the shoulder.  I went a moderate distance, perhaps 1/3 mile based on eyeballing the map, to the point where the Conewago Recreation Trail ends at the Lancaster/Lebanon line, then continued into Lebanon County.  Unlike in Lancaster County where the trail has markers every 0.5 miles, it looks like the Lebanon part is only marked every mile.  My modest goal (it was cold and windy) was to make it to mile 1.0, which is almost directly beneath the overpass of the PA Turnpike.  Off in the distance I could see traffic, which told me there was a road ahead, so I decided to go to that point.  This is Eckert Road and is probably about 1/5 mile from the Turnpike.  When I returned to Prospect Road, I found my pedometer had only recorded 1.3 miles, which obviously is not correct.  Sometimes I don’t put it at the right place on my belt and I get bad readings…

Looking at the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail map I see some potential: there are trailheads at Lawn Road and Colebrook Road with the connection with the Horseshoe Trail almost in the middle.  While I’ve been concentrating on Lancaster County, exercise is exercise!
