Spring 2011: Attempt to walk the entire length of the Heritage Rail Trail Park/Northern Central Rail Trail
Thursday, March 10th, 2011As a followup to last fall’s attempt, my spring 2011 goal is to walk the entire length of the Heritage Rail Trail Park in York County, and continue into Maryland on the connecting Northern Central Rail Trail. In addition, I also have a goal to (at least once!) beat last fall’s distance record of 8.4 miles by doing at least 10 miles in one walk.
March 18: Took the 70-degree Friday afternoon off to walk. Started at Glatfelter Station parking lot. Initially had no energy and struggled through the first mile, but by the time I got to the second mile things got better. Reached a bench just over the bridge at the white mile 44 post where I rested a little and returned. That point is estimated to be about mile 8.3. Total GPS distance: 9.78 miles…a new personal record. Next time I will probably have to park at Glen Rock (around mile 5) and walk back up to that bench.
March 13: Essentially a station-to-station walk. Parked at Brillhart Station and walked the short distance back north to mile marker 17, then down to 13, which is just past the bridge over the creek to the Glatfelter Station parking lot, where I will start next time. This involved going through Howard Tunnel. Total GPS distance: 7.69 miles. (I expected a little more, but perhaps lost some distance going through the 350-foot tunnel twice.)
March 5: Started at the municipal parking lot at Philadelphia & Pershing in York City. This is a monthly pass lot, but it’s available for other use on weekends. Mile marker 21 is not far from this parking lot, just behind the bus transit center. Made it to mile marker 17, where the next parking area at Brillhart Station is within view. Total distance: approx 8.2 miles.
